POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Relay telephone calls between Deaf, Hard of Hearing, speech impaired consumers (TTY users) and Hearing consumers through the telephone network.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Accept and place local and long distance relay calls for consumers.
2. Follow desired method of billing instructions and enter billing information into the system.
3. Translate electronic messages to voice messages and voice messages to electronic messages.
4. Translate sentence structures and language patterns from American Sign Language (ASL) to Spanish and Spanish to ASL to ensure the correct message is relayed.
5. Convey the caller's actual feelings and emotions.
6. Relay contents of the call as accurately as possible without intervening in the conversation.
7. Maintain strict consumer confidentiality.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Typing skill of 50+ WPM using a personal computer.
2. Good use of Spanish and English grammar and spelling.
3. Good articulation and pleasing speaking voice.
4. Ability to tolerate the stress of emotional dialogues.
5. Ability to learn ASL syntax.
6. Sensitivity to consumer needs.
